Champions League Round of 16 Preview

The Champions League is finally back after its usually break, and there are some huge games to talk about. I’ll be discussing the games that will be the most entertaining, and should definitely provide an enjoyable fixture, where it could to either way. So games where the result should be pretty obvious won’t be discussed. So let’s get into the previews

Monaco vs Manchester City

This was the fixture Man City didn’t want. On paper for a casual football fan this shouldn’t be a challenge for the citizens, but for those who know how impressive Monaco have been this season will know this will be a tough game for City. Man city have been having a very mixed season, with some days their attack looks amazing and can roll any team over, but some other days they look like they can’t string a pass together and have to rely on their defence to help out, which is never the best idea, as their defence is just so unreliable. Monaco on the other hand have been unbelievable this season. They are a well drilled team with no real stars. All their players contribute in some way. With their wingers, Lemar and Bernardo Silva, have been playing very well considering they are playing at a very young age. Both have an incredible work rate and contribute for the team. Silva being the stand out player. Earning 5 goals and 5 assists so far, and having a man of the match performance against Spurs. They’ve also been solid at the back. With Kamil Glik being a stand out performer for them. Even though City could easily clinch this if De Bryune and David Silva have Man of the match performers. But Monaco could be the safe bet here

Prediction: Monaco 3-1 Manchester City on Aggregate

PSG vs Barcelona

Unai Emery might be having a dismal time in Ligue 1, but knock out competitions are his specialty. He was brought in from Sevilla for this specific purpose, so if he doesn’t get far, he won’t be having a long future in the capital. PSG have to hope they can hold back MSN and give the ball to Cavani as much as possible. It takes a lot of chances for Cavani to eventually score. So constant service is needed for PSG to have any chance. Barcelona have to start with their best XI. Players like Andre Gomes shouldn’t be in this team because they look so much worse with him in. Iniesta and Rakitic need to start. Barca just need to play the way they play and out pass PSG. And PSG need to be creative, and create as many chances as possible for Cavani, if they want to get anything out of this fixture.

PSG 2:3 Barcelona on Aggregate

Real Madrid vs Napoli

If it wasn’t for Juventus, Napoli would be walking this league. They have a brilliant midfield, with Hamsik being that direct player to drive them forward. They also possess the most inform striker in the world right now in Dries Mertens. Napoli have a chance here. They just need to keep a clean sheet at the Bernebau. Which isn’t an easy task, and win their home game. Both are difficult tasks because of how difficult Madrid are to beat. They have the best and most balanced midfield in the world. With Kroos being the best, Modric being a consistent performer and Casemiro being that destroyer. Their squad depth is amazing as well. Having replacements for every player in the starting XI. Good replacements in fact. No matter how much I want Napoli to surprise us all, I can Madrid having no problems in this fixture if they get Hamsik out the game.

Prediction: Real Madrid 4:2 Napoli on Aggregate

P.S I didn’t mention Bayern vs Arsenal because that shouldn’t be a difficult game for Bayern. Plus Arsenal don’t get past this point usually. Only other game I’d keep note of but isn’t too big would be Sevilla vs Leicester. Because Leicester’s unpredictability in Europe. But should be easy for Sevilla.

Thanks for Reading.
